Calisthenics Beat a Gym Membership You Won't Use

September 19, 2026 · Joe, Wealthy Warriorz

The best workout program is the one you do. For a lot of people, that's not a $50-a-month membership sitting unused after February.

Push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats, and planks cover most of what you need, and they travel. Deployed, PCSing, staying with your in-laws for two weeks: the workout doesn't stop because there's no gym.

Progression is the part people skip

Bodyweight training only works if you keep making it harder: slower reps, pauses, one-arm or one-leg versions, more volume. A pull-up bar and a few resistance bands cover what bodyweight alone can't. You don't need to quit the gym. You just don't need one to stay consistent.

What that progression looks like

  • Push-ups: incline, then standard, then wide, then deficit, then archer.
  • Pull-ups: dead-hang negatives, then wide-grip chin-ups, then close-grip pull-ups, then commando pull-ups.
  • Core: knee raises, then lying leg raises, then toes-to-bar, then the L-sit, which tests discipline as much as strength.

Move to the next step only once the current one is easy, not once you're bored of it.

Five minutes, every day

Hollow body hold, straight-arm side plank, superman hold. Forty-five seconds on, fifteen off, three rounds. It's short, and it adds up.

Two moves worth adding no matter what else you do

A dead hang from the bar, to decompress a spine that's been sitting all day. A reverse Nordic curl, to build control on the way down instead of just dropping into a squat. Neither needs a program. Five minutes is enough.

The biggest risk is skipping the warm-up

Ego is what gets people hurt. Rush the advanced moves and you're sidelined for weeks instead of building toward them. The real flex isn't a one-arm push-up. It's still training next month.
