Where you put your money matters as much as how much you put in. Here's a rank-aware breakdown of where that money can actually work.
Junior enlisted (E1-E4). Start with TSP, contribute enough to get the full match, and build a small emergency fund in a high-yield savings account before anything riskier. The Savings Deposit Program, available during qualifying deployments, pays up to 10% interest on deposits up to $10,000, a real, guaranteed benefit that's dramatically better than any bank account.
NCOs (E5-E6). Once the emergency fund and TSP match are handled, a Roth IRA is worth opening for tax-free growth on top of TSP. Check the current annual contribution limit before maxing it out, since it adjusts periodically.
Senior enlisted and junior officers. This is often the range where house hacking with a VA loan becomes realistic, alongside increasing TSP contributions beyond just the match.
Field grade officers and senior NCOs. Broader index fund investing outside of retirement accounts, and revisiting whether real estate or a side business fits your longer runway to retirement.
Across every rank: a high-yield savings account for anything liquid, CDs for money you know you won't need for a fixed period, and the stock market for anything with a genuinely long time horizon. The Savings Deposit Program during deployment is one of the best guaranteed-return benefits in the entire military pay system and it's routinely left unused.
