Where Crypto Might Actually Fit in a Military Family's Plan
Everything else on this site is built around slow, boring, repeatable systems. Crypto isn't that. It's a different kind of risk than a TSP fund or an index fund, and it doesn't replace either one.
If you're going to own it, treat it like the volatile asset it is
A good rule: crypto belongs in the part of your portfolio you could watch drop 50% in a bad month without changing your plan. That means a small slice of what you invest, not a core holding, and never money set aside for an emergency fund, an upcoming PCS, or anything else with a deadline.
Keep it a small percentage. The exact number is your call. The rule is that you could lose it without derailing everything else.
Stick to established, widely traded coins if you're new. The newer and thinner the market for a coin, the more it behaves like a bet than an investment.
Use a regulated exchange, not an app you heard about once. Crypto isn't covered by SIPC, the protection that backs a regular brokerage account if the firm fails, so the exchange's security and track record matter more.
Learn the taxes before you trade. Selling crypto, trading one coin for another, or spending it can all be taxable. Starting with 2025 sales, exchanges report your proceeds to the IRS on Form 1099-DA.
Crypto is for people who already have the basics covered: the TSP match, an emergency fund, and no high-interest debt. It isn't where you start. Where you do start is in Best Places to Grow Your Money as a Service Member.
